Hi Everyone

I have a winforms eco 3 application in D2006 architect for which I
have not decided what to do yet. So I wonder if someone has already
gained some experience in migrating to D2007. Maybe you would like to
share some thoughts on this subject.

I have a few questions :
- Is D2007 stable or at least a bit stabler then D2006 with mid size
ECO models and sources (100,000 lines)?
- Does D2007 still corrupt your forms when you leave them open?
- How much time is involved in migrating a single form from WinForms
to VCLForm?
- Is there finally some documentation included which is substantial
and covers all of ECO from Borland or Capable Objects?
- any other experiences ? Do you think it is better to wait for VS2005/2008
with ECO4?

Many thanks for your thoughs and opinions

It depends on which Winforms components that you used. If those components
are only available for Winforms, then you'll have to find a corresponding
component for VCL.Net. Like us, we are currently using components only
available for Winforms(i.e.: DevExpress XtraGrid), so for us to migrate that
application to VCL.Net wouldn't be feasible. Unless CodeGear implements an
excellent interop between VCL.Net and Winforms(at least to be able to use
Winforms components inside a VCL.Net form).

We're still debating on migrating to VS2005/2008, but it might not be with
ECO, if we do decide to go to VS.

options do we have? Does somebody have some experience in migrating?

Thanks, Michael

Hi Jesper

What can we expect from capable objects in the future to support old-style ECO applications/early adopters?

If you are refering to C#/Winform applications, these will be supported
in VS. EcoIV still has the same level of Winform support as EcoIII
does (even some more), but due to events outside of our control, the
CodeGear IDE does not support Winforms any longer. The Eco codegen does
not support C# in RadStudio either, but if you are using EcoModeler,
eco will support model-packages defined in C# in any IDE it happens to
live in. Eco would support models in VB or J++ too if there was a
codegenerator for it...

The one combination that will not be supported under any IDE, now or in
the future is Delphi.Net Eco applications with a Winform UI. Mainly
because there is no Delphi.Net IDE that supports Winforms. The only
possible solution in this case is if someone could convince Gerrit to
make a Chrome codegenerator for EcoModeler.

My guess though is that the number of Delphi.Net Winform Eco apps is
smaller than other language/UI combinations.

/Jonas
